About the program

Program Session Dates

In this program, activities focus on building skills and confidence promoting discovery and independent play. We show kids they are competent and capable. With adult guidance and supervision children are encouraged to connect with their environment, make discoveries and explore the natural landscape. Building physical autonomy and friendship with cooperative games & activities; kids will develop an appreciation for the land, learn about local fora & fauna, basic bushcraft, and use natural & found materials creatively. Through engaging with nature, participants will be supported in improving mental and physical health, enriched cognitive development; this program aims to deepen social & emotional connections; build empathy; provide respite from the pressures of modern life, opportunities for learning & practicing mindfulness, & self regulation; and how to self-manage risk in play (with adult guidance), all in a fun, accessible, and age appropriate context.

Jessica Shepherd

Jessica is a trained artist, educator, facilitator, food enthusiast, and parent of two. Since 2008 she has been providing children with safe, fun and enriching experiences in her home and community. She loves making messes and experimenting with art, gardening, cooking, and spends her free time camping and adventuring outdoors. Taking cues from Positive Parenting, Mindfulness, and Non-Violent Communication, Jessica has developed educational support & curriculum content, & hands-on kids programming for organizations including the Education department of the AGO, Ontario Museum of Archeology, The Children's Storefront (EarlyON), Essential Skills Advantage, The Canadian Homeschooler, Native Child & Family Services Toronto.

Child Nature Connect is primarily located on the traditional territories of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnaabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples,  the lands that are now known as part of Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Williams Treaties signed with multiple Mississaugas and Chippewa bands. Child Nature Connect recognizes the enduring presence of all the Indigenous, First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples on the land we now call Canada.
